Going into this class I had never written a line of code or built a circuit in my life. So project one was less about making something perfect and more about making something that worked at all.
My original idea came from a Mr. Beast video featuring a concept car inspired by Pandora from Avatar, the planet where everything is biologically connected, where touching one living thing sends a signal through the whole ecosystem. The car had scales that would physically react when you ran your hand across them. I wanted to capture that idea, make something small and alive-feeling that responded to a human presence.
Coding and circuitry from scratch is humbling. I ran out of time on the more ambitious version, but I kept the core idea — proximity as interaction. What I ended up building was an Arduino circuit with an ultrasonic sensor that reads how close your hand is and changes the LED color in response. Far away, it glows blue. Come closer, it shifts to green. Get right up on it, red. I used a small robotic face casing to cover some of the wiring and give it a little personality.
It's simple. I know that. But I built it myself, it works, and it does exactly what I wanted it to do — it notices you. That felt like enough for a first attempt, and honestly it made me want to keep going.
